A gut-wrenching novel about the mining industry in this country. Jess's description and characters will draw you in and keep you with them to the end of this moving novel. I was reading THE WIDOWS simultaneously with EDUCATED, and had trouble keeping them separate! Fabulous novel about an important aspect of our American history that is so meaningful still today.Tags : The Widows: A Novel [Jess Montgomery] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>“ The Widows</i> kept me on the edge of my seat. One of my favorite movies is John Sayles's Matewan, which is about the mining wars in West Virginia in 1920 (and if you've never seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it). The Widows reminded me of it in a number of ways, though it's set in Ohio and a few years later. First, the book is about the tensions in a coal mining town that has had two significant mining disasters that have touched nearly everyone in the town. Second, the nascent labor movement plays a significant role, as it did in Matewan. But The Widows' Rossville and neighboring Kinship are fictional constructs, whereas Matewan is based largely on fact. What really makes The Widows interesting, though, are the two main characters, both women, who are inspired by two historical figures Maude Collins, the first female sheriff in Ohio, and Mother Jones, the famous activist and labor organizer.
Lily Ross is the refined wife of the sheriff, Daniel Ross, who early on is found murdered. The movers and shakers of the town try to pin it on a miner who's been pushing for a union. Lily is named acting sheriff until there's an election, but she's not the pushover the power elite thought she'd be. She's relentless about tracking down her husband's killer, and in the process, she meets Marvena, a bootlegger and illiterate but astute woman whose brother, Tom, is the unfortunate patsy the mine owner tried to frame. Marvena's common-law husband, like Lily's father, died in a mine collapse, and Marvena has taken up the mantle of organizer from him. And, it turns out, long before Lily entered his life, Daniel had been Marvena's lover and may be the father of her older daughter, who's gone missing.
There are many ins and outs to the plot, and Jess Montgomery weaves them together well. The book draws you in quickly and keeps you reading. As much as I liked the characters, the plot and Montgomery's writing, I didn't have a visceral emotional connection, however, and I found the recurring references to Daniel's belief in "signs" to be a little hokey. That's why I've rated it four stars instead of five. But it's well worth reading if you like historical fiction and memorable female characters.
This is a powerful, beautiful book. I was fortunate to read an advanced reading copy. Strong women protagonists, rich historical details, and an engrossing, compelling story. I re-read it upon its official release and loved it even more on a second reading. I'm recommending it everywhere--this makes a great book club read!
This book is a well-researched tale. The time period and events resonated for me based on very similar family stories. The story is well written and well woven between the perspectives of two strong women. It’s a great book. I read it straight through. Can’t wait for the next one, Jess!
An engaging page-turner with sharply drawn characters and wonderful description that soars like the image of the hawk that opens and closes this engrossing mystery novel. Jess Montgomery is a consummate storyteller. I received an advanced readers’ edition of the book and have recommended it to my book club, friends and other writers.
I choose to rate this book as excellence by saying the author gave the book a well-researched and it is a combination of emotional and realistic concepts that give the reader a wellness of altitude!!!!!! I would recommend that book to anyone regardless of perception!!!!!!!!!
When I read the book review, I wasn't sure I would even like the book. THE WIDOWS is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I became so attached to these two women, I hated to read to the end of the book and I will definitely read it again.
Jess Montgomery's The Widows is a gorgeous novel brimming with the rich flavor of Appalachia and the history of coal mining, featuring two, hard-scrabble women who will stop at nothing to solve the murder of a man they both hold dear. The writing is beautiful, the plot gripping, and the development of the characters done in such a way that you feel they are ready to leap off the page. This story will stick with you long after you turn the final page, and will leave you eager for the next installment in the series.
