Kat and Meg Conquer the World Anna Priemaza Books

Ohhhh, how I adore Kat and Meg! This is a book I loved madly and which I think is going to resonate with SO many teens!

Let's start with Kat. She has anxiety. She gets panic attacks at parties, is scared of planes. But she's so much more than those obvious fears. She is all the little fears of anxiety, too--the irrational fears that pop out of the blue to say the most minute thing could be disastrous. She looks at her frail grandfather, sitting in a chair, and wishes he wouldn't get so comfy because she's scared he won't get up again. Her anxiety isn't always dramatic. It's mundane and obnoxious and REAL.

Then there's Meg. Meg has ADHD. Her thoughts jump from one thing to the next, trains of logic that make perfect sense only when in her head. Like Kat, I have anxiety. Unlike Meg, I do not have ADHD. But I got to be in both their heads and feel the frustrations of both these things. Their voices are distinct and so believable. People always talk about books having "voice"? This book has HELLA VOICE. ALL THE VOICE. And so many teens are going to connect to that. To their own ADHD. To their own anxiety. (Which, if I'm being honest, was a part of myself I never thought I'd see in a book because I thought it would come off as redundant or boring. But in the hands of Anna Priemaza? It DOESN'T. How freaking validating!) You want to know what else kids will connect with? Friendship. Messy friendship. Friendship that empowers two lonely, oh-so-different girls. And all set to the background of video games and YouTube videos! How many kids will pick up this book and see themselves in that? How many kids will see validation of the online communities that mean so much to them?

This is a book I loved--but more than that, it's a book I would pick up in a heartbeat to give to any teen in my life.

Kat and Meg Conquer the World Anna Priemaza Books Reviews

I recently got diagnosed with ADHD, and so my friend K recommended this book. Both as a good read and as one of the titular characters has ADHD as well. Even though some of how she is is of course different or stronger symptom wise than me, seeing Meg live her life and cope with the hard parts really struck a chord with me. There were some good small details in there likening the experience to my real life.

I also loved the friendship dynamic between Kat and Meg. They were supportive and cool and it felt like a natural friendship. Two slightly quirky kids finding a deep and true friendship with each other.

The romance elements were also done well too. They grew and felt organic. It was especially funny watching it from the other friend’s eyes, just like growing up and pushing your BFF into their crush.

There’s so much else too, but you have to read it to find some of the fun, interesting, and all too real dynamics and details.
Kat and Meg Conquer the World by Anna Priemaza has a bright, fun cover that entices readers. Kat has just started at a new school. Meg attends this school and the two of them become partners for their class Science Project. Neither one of them has any truly good friends and, little by little they grow a friendship beginning with their mutual love of a certain video game. Through the ups and downs of growing up and building relationships, Kat and Meg discover how to cope and enjoy their lives and accept themselves just as they are. You never know when you’re going to find a friend! The maturity level of the two main characters didn’t always feel consistent, but otherwise, this book is a fun read that young teens will be able to relate to. 3.5 stars for this realistic fiction written for teens.
This book! I LOVE this book.

I won't lie, I finished reading it a few weeks ago and I have spent every day since trying to figure out how to encapsulate just how much I love it. It hit absolutely every one of my soft spots. Wonderful friendships. Complex families. Adorable old men. Fun and realistic romance. VIDEO GAMES.

And all of it delivered through two amazing, unique girls who simply jump off the page. Kat IS teenage me, and her thoughts and fears and triumphs spoke to me as clearly as if the author had read my journals while writing. I'd be Kat's best friend in a heartbeat.

But thankfully I don't have to be, because she already has Meg--fierce, excitable Meg who I want nothing more than to wrap into the snuggest, warmest hug of my life. These girls feel so real, and their friendship is one that had me rooting for it from the first page they shared together.

Another confession I cried four times while reading. The emotions packed in these pages--happy, sad, and everything between--are rendered so beautifully. The moment I finished reading, I already began flipping back to find my favorite scenes. I'll be returning to them again and again. I'm quite sure that once I have this in hard copy, I'll wear the binding thin with my rereads.

If for nothing else, read this book for the writing. The author captures the most complex emotions in heartbreakingly relatable terms. I can't count the number of times I stopped to read a paragraph aloud and revel in its beauty.

This is the book I spent my teen years searching for. It's a book about finding forever friendships. It's a book about being geeky and vulnerable and different and coming out on the other side.

Pick up this book. Full stop. No ifs, ands, or buts. You won't regret it.
I’m ADHD and wish I'd had this book when I was 13, because it would have changed my life. I would have killed to have seen myself in a character the way I saw myself in Meg.
This book gets everything about ADHD and anxiety right! There were so many time when I wanted to stop Meg and force her to rethink her snap decisions about school and relationships. Impulsive, destructive ADHD moments that had me clutching my chest with familiar anxiety. The steady drumbeat of the gigantic looming science project that serves as the backdrop for the novel will haunt my dreams.
But what I loved even more about this novel was the genuine, lovely friendship at the center of it. It's rare to read a book about the redemptive possibilities of friendship. A wonderful book!
